You don’t have to search the Bible too hard to find some advice on money and wealth. Listen to a few of Solomon’s favorite sayings . . . “Wealth is worthless in the day of wrath, but righteousness delivers from death.” “Whoever trusts in his riches will fall, but the righteous will thrive like a green leaf.” “One man gives freely, yet gains even more; another withholds unduly, but comes to poverty.”

“A generous man will prosper; he who refreshes others will himself be refreshed.” “The blessing of the Lord brings wealth, and he adds no trouble to it.”

I came across a couple of stories this week that you might find interesting. You’ve seen them . . . those crazy guys with those long wands hovering over the ground and wearing some kind of listening head gear. In parks and beaches – public lawn areas – there they are eccentric people with their eyes down and a ready “pickin” tool in their free hand. And what are they doing? Searching for buried treasure. Well perhaps we shouldn’t laugh at them so much . . . in fact maybe we should go out and buy ourselves a metal detector. Two such enthusiasts – Reg Mead and Richard Miles – have located a grand stash of Iron Age coins in the European Island of Jersey. Worth? Oh, only a whopping $15.6 million. These two enthusiasts have been hunting in the general area for more than 30 years. Evidently, they had heard about an old farmer who had discovered some silver coins on his land and they decided to follow-up on the “rumor.” Too bad it took them 30 years!

In a similar story – although without the gadgets and without actually looking for it – construction workers, toiling away at a building site in France, discovered 497 pieces of gold worth about $1 million.

Here they were tearing out some old plaster on this grape-drying facility and falling out of the ceiling came all these coins. The thinking right now is that the coins were payment to a Prohibition era vintner from wine shipped to the United States. Here’s the craziest part of the story. For several years now the storage area had been used as sleeping quarters for the grape pickers – here they were sleeping underneath this incredible treasure just above them – unaware!

Stories like this nearly always catch my attention. What real treasure would you be willing to spend your time looking for . . . . let’s say for the next . . . hmmmmmm 30 YEARS!!!!!!! For some it has been over 30 years of their lives . . . looking in God’s Word for it’s hidden treasure. Have we found it? YES In Christ Jesus. And for others – the Good News of the Gospel – sorta just falls out of the sky . . . from out of nowhere, even while they are not looking for it. Either way, the REAL riches and wealth, will wind up in the hands of those who are in need. Do you want to be a part of that? Stay in God’s Word and keep looking to Jesus each day for your strength and daily needs.
